The fight for Nigeria's presidency in 2027 is heating up inside the African Democratic Congress, and the central question is simple: can Peter Obi beat Atiku Abubakar for the party's presidential ticket?
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former minister of transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have all declared their intention to contest under the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections. But it is the Obi-Atiku contest that has drawn the most attention, and the outcome may well determine whether the opposition can mount a credible challenge against President Bola Tinubu.

The Case for Obi
Obi's supporters argue his numbers speak for themselves. In 2023, Obi swept the South-East, Lagos, and the Federal Capital Territory, demonstrating strong regional appeal that few opposition figures can match.
A thought leader who spoke to Legit.ng put it more bluntly. "Despite all the rhetoric and mockery, Peter Obi is the one the Tinubu camp truly fears," he said, adding that an Atiku candidacy would be celebrated in the presidency's corner.
ADC chieftain Comrade Sylvester Edet Okon went further, dismissing the idea of a contest altogether. "Peter Obi does not need to defeat Atiku. Obi is already the presidential candidate for the ADC. All these initial gragra is just normal political moves and we all know about that," he said. Okon also called on Atiku to step aside, arguing that the rotation of power makes it the south's turn to produce the next president.
