Jay-Z and Beyoncé actually visited Ilorin around 2006 after being invited by Bukola Saraki to see clean water projects in the state.
While there, Jay-Z was turbaned by the Emir Ibrahim Sulu Gambari and even had a street named after him showing how seriously they were received. (Roundcheck - Authenticity and Clarity)
They also performed in Nigeria that same year during an independence celebration event in Lagos, making it one of their earliest visits to West Africa. (Nigerian Voice)
Short version: global superstars pulled up to Ilorin, embraced the culture, and kept it low-ego, rare level of humility.
